# Recognise Stroke F.A.S.T (Paralysis attack)
What is Stroke? Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die.
A stroke is a medical emergency. If you, or someone else, shows any signs of having a stroke you need to seek immediate medical attention.
Recognise stroke F.A.S.T.
Only a hospital test (MRI/CT scan) can confirm a stroke for sure, but it is important to know the signs and the Face Arm Speech Time test (F.A.S.T.)

ARM WEAKNESS: Ask the person to raise both arms and keep them there? Does any of the arm drop down?
SPEECH PROBLEMS: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? Is their speech slurred?
TIME TO CALL an ambulance
